"State now requires buildings to have protective wall at least 100 feet away from embassies and Consulates. Those walls and barriers also must protect against explosions and ramming attacks from vehicles, and they must be difficult to climb. Guard booths are placed at the perimeter of facilities, and windows and doors are bulletproof and resist forced entries. the new facilities are also strong enough to resist most earthquakes and bombs" (Hot, Flat, and Crowded; Friedman)
Post-9/11 the U.S. began to look outside their own counntry. The Americans never stopped to think that there could be outside threats, thus they built their outside facilities thinking that nothing bad could ever happen to them. Finally, after 9/11 the U.S. got a well needed wakeup call on the world outside of their own confined space. The U.S. government realized that they DO have threats and they DO have enmies, thus the began to upgrade their more important facilities such American Embassies and Consults. This wake up call made the U.S. Government more cautious, which they needed to be; they were to over onfident in their minds and their over confidence lead to the devistating 9/11, but now the outside facilities are more protected they are able to show the outside influences that they are now on the defencive side and can take almost anything thrown at them.
